Probably one of the ten most bizarre books I have ever read, this is a novel (of sorts) masquerading as the rules and history of an invented game. It's amusing in places, like all of Donleavy's work, but I must admit that I didn't really get it. Not remotely as good as
The Unexpurgated Code.

Well, that was what I thought a quarter of an hour ago. Now, I've poked around a bit on Google - Donleavy claims that the game of De Alfonce Tennis actually exists, and that people play it. Though I'm still sceptical. Anyway, if he's gone to these lengths to confuse the issue, the book does somehow appear funnier!
